Annual Conference FRAMING THE CITY Call for Papers and PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

The Call for Papers for the CRESC Annual conference, which will take place from the 6th to the 9th of September

The deadline to submit panel and individual proposals for this is the end of April.

The CRESC annual conference 2011 takes the rubric of 'framing' to scrutinise the processes by which cities are conceptualised, realised, lived, ordered and depicted, disrupted, changed and contested. More than half of humanity now lives in urban areas and city processes affect the whole globe. The rates of growth, decay and transformation; the diversity, complexity and flows of population and activities, as well as the scale of problems and possibilities posed by city life are breathtaking. This conference seeks to bring together contemporary approaches to the descriptive and analytical challenges of thinking through processes of change in urban and city contexts. The conference takes the following themes as inspiration for a call for papers with confirmed plenary speakers as shown:

  • CITY MATERIALITIES : (city objects, plans, designs, discourse, built environments, assemblages, archaeology, urban morphology, infrastructure, post-industrial regeneration, economies, mega events, spatiality …) Plenary speakers: Professor Nikos Salingaros (University of Texas at San Antonio) and Dr Albena Yaneva (University of Manchester)

  • CITY AFFECT:(the experiential, the senses, the auditory, passions, hopes, fears, violence, the imaginary, creative writing and literature …) Plenary speakers: Iain Sinclair and Professor Alistair Bonnett (University of Newcastle)

  • CITY ENVIRONMENTS: (sustainability, living and working environments, ecologies, city geographies, nature/culture, eco-cities …) Plenary speakers: Professor Maria Kaika (University of Manchester) and Professor Alan Simpson (Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow)

  • SOCIAL AND CULTURAL INEQUALITIES IN THE CITY : (social and cultural capital, governance, territorial dimensions of participation, contested spaces of belonging, social movements, underground resistance, critical urbanism) Plenary speakers: Professor Rosenlund Lennart (University of Stavanger, Norway) and Professor Talja Blokland (Humboldt University, Berlin)

  • MEDIATING THE CITY:(creative practices, cultural industries, urban identity, art, street art, broadcasting, music, advertising, dance, film, print and visual representation …) Plenary Speaker: Nick Couldry (Goldsmiths College, University of London)

  • CITY MIGRATION, TRANS-NATIONALITY AND BORDERS: (mobility, flows, boundaries, identities, difference and belonging, states, nations, settlements and borders) Plenary Speakers: Dr Sabine Hess (Institute for European Ethnology) and Dr. Jan Rath (University of Amsterdam)

Денис Визгалов. Впечатления от конференции "City Branding: The Search for place identity" (Богота, 20-22 января 2011)

Руководитель проектов направления «Муниципальное экономическое развитие» Института экономики города Д.В. Визгалов принял участие в международной конференции по брендингу городов в Боготе (Колумбия), состоявшейся 20-22 января.

Презентация Д. Визгалова

Полное название конференции – "City Branding: The Search for place identity".

Space and Flows: an International Conference on Urban and Extraurban Studies

SPACE AND FLOWS: AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON URBAN AND  EXTRAURBAN STUDIES
Monash University Prato Centre
Prato, Tuscany, Italy
17-18 November 2011
http://spacesandflows.com/conference-2011/

Following the success of our 2010 conference at the University of California, Los Angeles, the 2011 Spaces and Flows Conference will take place in Prato, Italy.  Prato is located in the Tuscany region of Italy, a short train ride from Florence and close to the Florence airport. Prato has yet to be transformed by mass tourism, even though it is in a beautifully preserved Italian Renaissance city. Historically home to a thriving textile industry, Prato has seen an influx of immigrant workers in the last 20 years.  This juxtaposition of the local-historical with the global-hypermodern makes Prato an excellent location to discuss human spatial conditions in global flows.

This conference aims to critically engage contemporary spatial, social, ideological, and political transformations in a transitional world. In a process-oriented world of movement, the global north and global south now simultaneously converge and diverge in a dialectic that shapes and transforms cities, suburbs , and rural areas. This conference addresses the nature and mapping of these forces and the dynamics that propel these changes. The conference also examines and defines the myriad of different spaces that make up our contemporary world, including urban, edgeurban, de-urban, micro-urban, greenfield, and off-the-grid.

In addition to plenary presentations, the Spaces and Flows Conference includes parallel presentations by practitioners, teachers, and researchers. We invite you to respond to the conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may submit their written papers for publication in the peer reviewed _Spaces and Flows: An International Journal on Urban and Extraurban Studies_. If you are unable to attend the conference in person virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for referring and possible publication. You also have the ability to upload your presentation to the Space and Flows YouTube playlist. Please sign up for our monthly newsletter http://spacesandflows.com/ideas/newsletter, and join us on Facebook and Twitter.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 17 February 2011. Future deadlines will be announced on the conference website after this date. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Full details of the conference, including an online proposal submission form, may be found at the conference website: http://spacesandflows.com/conference-2011/ .

We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope you will be able to join us in Prato in November.

Yours Sincerely,

Prof. David Wilson

Call for Papers: deadline for abstracts Feb 4th, 2011

While urban infrastructure has become a focus of debates on urban change, there have been relatively few attempts to examine the politics of infrastructures on an everyday basis. Recent years have seen a wide and diverse range of contributions that have demonstrated the centrality of infrastructures to a variety of urban processes and forms: for example, in the social relations of inequality in the city; in the making and unmaking of social collectives and urban life; in the emergence and consumption of privatised and customised infrastructures; in the relationship between urban ecologies and social differentiation; as a site of capitalist expansion and transformation; or in the presence and removal of infrastructure through urban demolition or militarization (e.g. Coutard, 2008; Coward, 2008; Kaika, 2005; Gandy, 2005; Graham, 2010; Graham and Marvin, 2001; Hodson and Marvin, 2009; Page, 2005; Shove et al, 2007; Swyngedouw, 2004; Thrift and French, 2002; Young and Keil, 2009). Across this multifaceted and critical set of debates, there has been relatively little explicit consideration of how a focus on the everyday might inform our conception of urban infrastructures and their role in urban production, negotiation and contestation.

2nd Place Branding Conference in Bogotá Colombia, January 20-22, 2011

The conference aims at enriching the dialogue between academics, practitioners and city representatives who often approach very similar issues from different angles. It explicitly adopts an interdisciplinary and international perspective aiming to address the theme in its full complexity. The conference will be held in the city of Bogotá, Colombia between Thursday 20th and Saturday 22nd January, 2011.

The conference programme will include keynote lectures, paper sessions and panel discussions. Delegates will have the opportunity to follow a technical tour of various interesting sites in the city demonstrating a range of relevant issues. A social programme will also be devised to foster interaction and networking opportunities.

Contributions
Contributions by scholars, researchers, doctoral students, practitioners, consultants and local/regional authorities are invited that address the general conference theme in divergent places, at different scales and in varied contexts. Empirical work and case studies that can offer new insights and best practice guidance are particularly encouraged. Contributions will preferably (but not exclusively) focus on one or more of the following conference sub-themes:

  • Theoretical and methodological issues of place branding/marketing

  • Conceptualization of place identity

  • Involving local communities in place branding/marketing

  • Place branding/marketing as a tool of urban and regional development

  • Experiential Place Branding

  • Assessment methods: how to measure place branding/marketing success

  • Place branding and management of tourism destinations

  • Branding the cultural and creative city

  • Branding the green city

  • International networks and place branding

  • Place Branding through storytelling

Why Bogotá?
In the past 10 years Bogotá has undergone radical changes and it is today one of the most vibrant cities in the world, both culturally and business wise. But as it is often the case, image takes a long time to follow reality. Bogotá is thus about to launch its new city marketing strategy and offers an excellent case study for the conference.
